Surprise-packed Hanover

Hanover is a city embedded in greenery, a trade fair city, a city with the world’s biggest marksmen’s fest and the world-famous baroque gardens in Herrenhausen. We have lovingly restored historic buildings, chic contemporary ones, widely varied museums and exciting theatres. Our zoo is unique in Europe.

Eilenriede, (c) Tim Schredder/Wikipedia The Eilenriede forest is a green inner-city oasis, the Masch lake an attraction with sailboats and parties in summer, iceskating and mulled wine in winter.

Our universities and technical colleges give us vibrant student life. The opera house in the city centre is surrounded by elegant shops, malls and restaurants. Shopping streets and inviting promenades radiate star-like from the central and always lively Kröpcke place.

Nanas, (c) Jürgen Götzke/Wikipedia Those who prefer it quieter stroll through the medieval alleys of the Old Town to the banks of the Leine River, where Niki de St. Phalle’s amply-proportioned polyester Nanas stand and a flea market is a Saturday morning fixture.

Herrenhäuser Gärten, (c) Ingo Rickmann/Wikipedia Hanover’s attractions are easy to reach because distances are short, the transport system has been world-class since the world fair in 2000 and is uncongested most of the time.

What is more beautiful and varied than Hanover? The surrounding countryside, of course. Getting out into the country is fast in the Hanover region. Lower Saxony’s most beautiful landscapes are right outside the state capital’s front door. Sports and leisure fun are writ large.

Walking, biking, canoeing and horseback riding – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. In spring we eat asparagus, in winter curly kale, and the Steinhuder Meer, northwest Germany's largest inland sea, a vacation resort near Neustadt, entices with smoked eel and all kinds of water sports. Large forests, low mountain ranges, heather landscapes, lakes and rivers make the Hanover surrounds a leisure and excursion paradise. Interesting half-timbered nearby towns like Celle, Nienburg and Hameln are attractive shopping and culture destinations.

And if that’s not enough, the sky is always open, too. We take off daily from Hanover Airport.
